Outline of Course
This course will explore the varied and vibrant work of Australian Women Artists of the first half of the twentieth century, as represented in the Castlemaine Art Gallery Permanent Collection. Kate Stones will open a window into the world of well known artists such as Margaret Preston and Clarice Beckett and the other lesser known one such as Ada Plante and Yvonne Atkinson. A talk and discussion will be followed by an option to do some drawing or writing in the gallery using the artworks as starting points. Expressions of interest are sought for this initial session with Kate, the education officer at the Castlemaine Gallery. The course will be ongoing if there is sufficient response.

CHANGES IN BRAIN FUNCTION WITH AGEING with Dr Paul

Week 1 Why do we experience changes in our mental abilities as we age?
Week 2 What happens in our brains to cause these changes?
Week 3 And what can we do to keep our minds sharp? A series of 3 one hour sessions is being offered by Dr Paul Maher MB BS FRCS Dip Pal Care. Sessions will include time for questions and answers. Outline of Course
In these 3 sessions we will cook food which is tasty, nourishing, interesting and simple to prepare. We will share ideas about shopping, being thrifty, saving time, not wasting anything, effective freezer use and enjoy the introduction of new ideas. We will meet in private homes and eat the
food prepared. Maximum of 6 participants; small charge for ingredients; recipe sheets provided.

CROQUET FOR BEGINNERS

Outline of Course
An introduction to the sport of Golf Croquet. Being offered is a series of six
one hour sessions of free tuition for a group of 4 to 6. This version of Croquet is growing in popularity owing to its simplicity and competiveness. Easy to play, requires strategic skills and accuracy. Very popular in Egypt!
Course will be dependent on weather/green conditions.

Expectation of participants
Wear flat shoes. Ability to be on your feet for an hour and be able to
swing a mallet of 1.5kg.

CULTURAL REVOLUTION – PEOPLES’ REPUBLIC of CHINA 1968/9

Outline of Course
Expressions of interest are invited for this fascinating journey with Diana Collier. Experiences of University students (3rd Yrs) on an educational tour organized the Nat. Union Univ. Students, 1968/9. The Peoples Republic was not recognized by Australia ‘till 1973. The days were spent visiting industries, temples-become- colleges, historic sites, naval/army quarters, heroes, schools, homes,... and nights were devoted to study of the Little Red Book and the Cultural Revolution. Theatre, film and other cultural activities were part of our program. We met some of the Viet Cong and of course the Peoples Liberation Army.

INTRODUCTION TO CONTRACT BRIDGE

This course aims to introduce participants to the game. The course usually takes 4-6 weeks. When it is completed, members will be encouraged to join the continuing Bridge class on Tuesday afternoons.

STEM CELLS – all you wanted to know!

Week 1 Introduction to basic embryology and the discovery of stem cells within the human embryo.
Week 2 History of stem cell research.
Week 3 Application of stem cell therapy – how far it has progressed.
Week 4 The future of stem cell therapy – and the ethical issues involved.

SUDAN and the REFUGEE EXPERIENCE

Expressions of interest are sought by Vic for the following single session: A young man from the local Sudanese community is preparing a 15 minute Power Point presentation about his flight from civil war in the Sudan. His escape involved a 9 month walk across difficult and inhospitable terrain, years in Ethiopia before fleeing on foot to Kenya, then years in Kenya before his arrival in Australia. An open discussion of issues raised will follow."
