ABORIGINAL HISTORY – OUR SHARED HISTORY

Course Description
Aboriginal History – Our Shared History provides the opportunity tofocus on the lesser known aspects of the colonization of Australia and the resultant impact on
the lives of the indigenous peoples. The topics to be covered in 2008 will include the first
Land Rights case to go to the Federal Court, the remarkable life of Eddy Mabbo, attempts in
different parts of the country to recover traditional languages and the struggle for citizenship.
Sessions will provide also opportunities to consider Aboriginal culture from ceremony to land
management. Video and audio material will be used as the basis for group discussion and
participants will be invited to share opinions and concerns regarding current issues.

It is assumed that members of this group have had some previousexperience playing Bridge. It is not important in which system of Bridge the experience was

BUSHWALKING and ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Course Description
This activity caters for those members who enjoy bushwalking in agroup. Most of the walks will be around the Castlemaine area. As long as we are not walking
in a National Park or on private land, you may bring your dog, but it must be on a lead at all
times. All members are encouraged to participate and to sometimes be the walk leader. The
walks are approximately 5 – 7kms in distance. Where there is a fifth Wednesday in the month
there will be an extra walk. These will be of medium difficulty and may be longer in distance
or we may travel further afield whereby participants will need to carry their packs, drinks and
their lunch.

known writers are Chaucer, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson. Our selections will begin with
Chaucer’s
Nun’s Priest’s Tale and Deloney’s Jack of Newberrie , Chapter 1, then we continuewith one of Marlowe’s plays and Thomas Kyd or Thomas Dekker to complete the Elizabethan
years. The Revenge plays of the Jacobeans will include Shakespeare and Webster, Middleton

Charles Dickens – fierce and passionate social critic, great storyteller, a man of contradictions full of the joie de vivre but also of underlying anguish. We
shall look at some of his novels, particularly those that examine in depth the social system of
England in the early nineteenth century. Members of the class should read at least part of one
Dickens book each month, the first (February) being "Pickwick Papers" and the second
(March) "Oliver Twist".

FAMILY HISTORY

Course Description
This course is offered to those who are interested in researching theirfamily history and have a pc computer at home. Sorry but I have never used an Apple
computer so I cannot give assistance to Mac users. Some may have no idea of how to go
about researching their family, and others, with some knowledge may just want help. All may
want to use the library of data that the U3A Family History Group holds, or just help in
assessing the mountain of data that exists on the web. The research is gathered onto the
computer and set out as a conventional “tree” using the Ancestry.com. program which will be
supplied. You can even insert any photographs you may have
.This is a hands on exercise and will last for the whole year. The first term at the
Octopus and then later, once you have learned the basics, and can research at home,
there will be a once a month session at the Octopus where you can ask about problems
you have encountered. Your family tree data can be carried on a floppy disk.

THE REFORMATION

Course Description
This course will trace the Reformation throughout Europe from theearly Anabaptist protests to the mid-seventeenth century. Against a background of change in
religious thinking and practice, the focus will be on individuals who played a significant role
in Reformation history. Such individuals will include, for example, John Hus, Martin Luther,
Huldreich Zwingli John Calvin, John Knox, Isabella of Spain, Cardinal Caraffa, Ignatius of
Loyola, Erasmus, Henry V111, Pope Leo X, Marie de Medici, the Duke of Alba and Queen
Christina of Sweden. Class members will be asked to undertake research of the lives of some
of these individuals and report their findings to the class.

Course Description
This course will be an examination of the German experience fromthe end of World War 1 to the collapse of Hitler’s Third Reich in 1945. The question of why
the Great Dictator arose in a nation of such high culture is relevant to our own times. World
War 2 is within the memory of most U3A people and will lead hopefully to full participation
in discussion.
