Whipstick north of Bendigo
This walk was through bush that is very different to the bush that we usually walk in around Castlemaine. The Whipstick mainly comprises Bull, Blue, and Green mallees which are very closely spaced and only 5-7 metres tall. Wilson's melaleuca was in flower providing a wonderful display. We stopped at an ancient Mallee Fowl nest, and at the end of the walk we entered a fenced enclosure to view the rare and endangered Whipstick Westringia. Thanks Alan for the research and leading the walk.

May 31  2023
Mt Alexander Harcourt
On May 31 Deb lead 12 members on a 7.6 km exploration of Mt Alexander. Deb assisted us to find the ruins of the 19th century silk farm https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5882891. We then walked off track to a disused quarry that is about 1 km from the summit of Mt Alexander. https://heritage.harcourt.vic.au/harcourt-granite/
After resting at the quarry we headed back to Dog Rocks and on to Ed’s Seat. (Ed’s seat constructed from koala park parts by Ed Butler and a Conservation Volunteers crew.)
Thanks Deb for creating a trail that covered some of the highlights of the Mount.

May 24  2023
Rock of Ages Mount Moorul, Maldon
Yesterday (24/5) Heather and Sharon lead a walk at the Rock of Ages near Maldon. Our Bushwalking group last did this walk in September 2015 and the views are very impressive. Heather demonstrated how the App - Peakfinder helps to better understand where we are on the planet and the names of the peaks we could view west of Maldon.
It was a chilly morning and the walk to the top of the hill quickly warmed us up and we could remove the extra layer many were wearing. At the end of the walk many enjoyed coffee with a croissant or baguette at Le Sel in Maldon.
Thanks again Heather and Sharon.

May 10  2023
Italian Hill Fryers Ridge
Keith and Brier lead an interesting walk in the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park and mapped on Italian Hill (https://cartography.id.au/cdnhp_index.htm ) that we have not walked before with the group. The track was moderately rough and steep at the start and became easier as we progressed. The weather was very pleasant and the group enjoyed hearing the history of the area. Keith shared with us history of the water siphon and Sanger’s hut.
Thanks Keith and Brier

12 April 2023
Castlemaine
The group were ably led by Lorrainne and Geoff who had mapped out a loop walk in the Northern parts of the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park. Many of the tracks were disused which made for an adventurous walk and some were slippery from the rain.
We visited the Dja Dja wurrung Grand Mother tree, https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-04-24/indigenous-group-buys-land-to-protect-sacred-grandmother-tree/100065444,
Quartz Hill and the Batchelor’s Retreat. The group was well “rugged up " and happy to walk in spite of the light rain that fell during the walk.
Thanks again Lorrainne and Geoff

29 March 2023
Memorial Kevin Vallence MaineGaine
Twenty members enjoyed competing in the memorial Kevin Vallence MaineGaine. The event started with showers and finished in sunshine.
Five teams attempted to get the highest score within the two hour time limit. Simon’s team had the highest score but suffered penalty points for being overtime and so Julie F’s team were the winners on the day.
Each team walked about 8.5 kms and enjoyed the sit down when they clocked in at the end.
Thanks Ron and Cheryl for researching so many obscure facts about Castlemaine.

22 February 2023
The Domino Rail Trail
Lyonville to Trentham
Our leader Alan, planned to lead the walk in 2022 but the area was severely impacted by the excessive rainfall. It was interesting to view the impact of both heavy rain and a rain bomb (micro downburst) that leaves a scar on a relatively small area of the bush. If you google downburst you will see lots of images that that captures how dangerous it is to be caught in this type of weather event.
Thanks Alan.

2022

14 December 2022
Black Hill, Kyneton

Our final walk for 2022 was led as usual by John Butselaar at the Black Hill Reserve north of Kyneton. This year the walk route had to be modified to take into account track closures around the reserve.
The weather to the west looked a bit threatening at times but apart from a minor bit of drizzle we enjoyed another wonderful walk. Following the walk we repaired to John's home at Kyneton for a wonderful and relaxing lunch. At the end of lunch the Golden Walking Pole was transferred to Bryan Fitzgerald to hold on behalf of the convening group for 2023.
While the walk program for 2023 is already progressing well, there are still some walk dates available for members who wish to lead (or co-lead) a walk.
Thanks again John and Robyn

23 November 2022
Kalimna Park Castlemaine

Eighteen walkers enjoyed a leisurely stroll through Kalimna Park Castlemaine. The Golden Everlastings were everywhere.
Alan originally planned our walk to be south of Castlemaine but the heavy rain over recent weeks required a change to the program.
Peter has an extensive knowledge of Kalimna Park and he provided assistance to lead the walk which included visiting the Kaweka nature park.
Thanks Peter and Alan.

9 November 2022
Moonlight Flat

Thirteen walkers enjoyed a spring walk around Moonlight Flat. We followed parts of Dirty Dicks Gully and Sailors Gully. The trail was wet in places but was easy to navigate.
There were a couple of steep inclines which tested the fitness of some members. It was lovely to see lots of Chocolate Lillies (purple) and Everlasting (yellow) wildflowers.
Thanks Jules and Keith

26 October 2022
Fryers Ridge
Taradale

Eighteen walkers braved the prospect of a rainstorm to enjoy exploring the wildflowers at Fryers Ridge.
Keith has a good knowledge of the walking tracks in this area and was able to guide us around difficult water crossings that had emerged due to the extensive rain that had fallen in the area in recent days.
Thanks Keith.

12 October 2022
Red, White and Blue Mine Muckleford

Six members joined with Greg to explore the wild flowers and mining remnants around the Red, White and Blue Mine at Muckleford. Heavy rain was falling in Castlemaine at 7.30am but it didn’t start raining at Muckleford until after morning tea at about 11am. Greg confidently lead us off track and cross country and explained the abandoned mining sites at Dunns Reef and Tunnel Hill.
Thanks Greg for leading the walk.

31 August 2022
Big Hill
Bendigo

Eleven walkers took on the challenge to walk up Big Hill (423m) at the southern entrance to Bendigo. The weather was perfect and the view to the south was impressive.
We enjoyed Bryan’s short address on the farming history of the Ravenswood Run. The later part of the walk was a meander along the Coliban water channel. We took the northern fork in the track which resulted in a slightly longer than expected but nonetheless enjoyable walk. Thanks Tricia and Bryan

24 August 2022
Brisbane Ranges

Today’s walk was in the Brisbane Rangers 90 kms south of Castlemaine. We started and finished at the Boar Gully Camp Ground.
The day was cloudy and we were fortunate it remained dry during our walk. We enjoyed walking on good tracks and the vegetation included large areas of golden wattles and impressive grass trees.
At the conclusion we enjoyed lunch in Ballan.
Thanks Deb for leading us at a location that was new to all walkers.

10 August 2022
Castlemaine

Sixteen members attended today’s annual Soup Walk. There was lots of soup and bread and we all enjoyed filling our mugs more than once with a variety of soups to taste.
The walk was to the north of Castlemaine and it was good to see the start of the wild flower season.
Thanks Julie and Bryan for leading the walk and a special thanks to the cooks who prepared the soup and bread and the soup warmers. We enjoyed everything.

27 July 2022
Fryerstown

Fifteen walkers met at the Octopus for a walk around Fryerstown. Before leaving we took time to reminisce about and remember our good friend Kevin Vallence who had sadly passed away the previous week. The group parked at the Burke and Wills Mechanics Institute in Fryerstown. From there we walked around the old township hearing about its history, its buildings still standing, and those long gone. After a few kilometres we stopped to admire the magnificent Lambruk Estate, home to 1860s Mosquito mine owner Edward Rowe. From there we walked along Sugarbag track, then made our way cross country to the Fryerstown cemetery and the Blackhawk mine before returning to our cars. The weather was mostly cloudy and mild, with a short shower during the cross country section of our walk. Thanks Alan

13 July 2022
Walmer State Forest

It was a lovely clear crisp morning as we headed into the Walmer State Forest along some of the bike tracks and minor roads that meander through the bush land.
Some early wattles brightened the landscape and groups of choughs reacted to our presence. We checked out the progress on the amenity block at The Pines which is being developed by DEWLP as a gathering place for mountain bikers and others using the trails. The final kilometre of our walk followed the mountain bike blue trail. Morning tea was enjoyed at the Wiglesworth’s home after the walk. Thanks Bill and Deb.

22 June 2022
Vaughan Springs

Fifteen walkers set off in cloudy conditions from the Vaughan Springs car park and headed for Tubal Cain Cornish chimney.
We were grateful that Sue and Angie had reconnoitred the track because there were a number of track intersections. The day remained dry and we made it back to the car park by 12.30.
On the way back to Castlemaine most walkers stopped for lunch at the Five Flags Hotel in Campbells Creek to celebrate the winter solstice. We are all looking forward to more daylight!
Thanks Sue and Angie for leading the walk.

25 May 2022
Mt Alexander
Harcourt

Bryan B led us on an interesting 6 km walk around the highest part of the Mt Alexander Regional Park 744 metres above sea level.
We walked out on Ballantinia track (Ballantinia antipode) https://www.castlemaineflora.org.au/pic/b/balla/baant.htm on the east side of the mount and then up a steep pinch to Langs Lookout where we enjoyed views to Sutton Grange. https://harcourt.vic.au/langs-lookout-mount-alexander/
The group followed the Gold fields track over to the West side of the range stopping for morning tea at Shepherds Flat. https://harcourt.vic.au/shepherds-flat-lookout/
We then went off track until reaching an abandoned Quarry https://heritage.harcourt.vic.au/harcourt-granite/near to our starting point.
It was a relatively short walk and most members felt it was a good workout in our local bushland. Thanks BB.

11 May 2022
Kalimna North
Castlemaine

Eleven members met opposite the Castlemaine Secondary College in Lawson Parade for a walk around Kalimna Park north.
We began our walk, and soon arrived at the site of the Devonshire Reef mine where Peter Turner provided a brief history of the site. From there we wended our way up to the Tourist Road and across, following a foot pad down into Moonlight Flat.
There is a big difference between the southern end of Kalimna Park and where we were walking in a more park-like environment with visible signs of mining including the ruin of a substantial stone house with ancient fruit trees around it.
We continued past the grave of an unknown miner to the highest point in the park, before crossing over the Tourist Road again to return to our start point.
Thanks to Peter Turner for an excellent walk which was full of interest.

27 April 2022
Melville Caves Mt Kooyoora

Our walk to Melville Caves and Mt Kooyoora was very enjoyable. It is about one hour from Castlemaine and certainly a different landscape to our local area.
It has stunning granite boulders and great views of the countryside to the south. The weather was light mist and rain at times. It was good to be testing our coats.
Thanks Greg for leading the group on the day.

13 April 2022
Maldon

With a couple of last minute withdrawals, eleven walkers tackled the slopes of Mt Tarrengower in near perfect conditions for walking.
Interpretive boards at Anzac Hill and at the My Tarrengower tower provided the group with information about the area. This was supplemented by a couple of articles discovered by Bryan giving some information about Lisle's Reef and the Caledonian quartz kilns.
Most of the group then stayed on for lunch at the Kangaroo Hotel.
Thanks Bryan and Julie for leading the walk.

30 March 2022
Chewton

Eleven walkers enjoyed ascending The Monk south west of Chewton. We hiked on to the Dingo Park, inspected the Eureka Mine and strolled the Poverty Gully Channel back to the start of our journey.  Thanks to Heather for reading and sharing the 1862 publication (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/197093544?searchTerm=the%20monk%20Castlemaine)  which gave a colourful explanation of what past walkers to the Monk would have seen. We needed to use our imagination because the revegetation now blocks many of the described views!
Thanks Heather and Sharon for leading the walk.

23 March 2022
Elphinstone

Sixteen walkers met at the Octopus today and car pooled a short drive to Elphinstone where we parked at a crossing over the Coliban main channel.
Our walk followed the channel upstream for a short distance to a crossing where we followed a faint pad though the bush.
We then followed a number of tracks west and south to near Taradale where we stopped in the bush for a break.
From there we rejoined the Coliban main channel which we followed downstream to our start point.
Thanks Brier and Frances (and Keith in absentia).

2021

8 December 2021
Kyneton

It was great that we were able to have the annual Black Hill walk at Kyneton this year. Thanks John for leading the walk and to both John and Robyn for once again hosting our Christmas lunch and for their hospitality. John has been a member of the Bushwalking group for a long time and equally importantly has been our Leader for the last couple of years.
We have all appreciated his wisdom and guidance in what has been (due to Covid) a difficult time for the group.
We look forward to John continuing to walk with the group next year. Alan Roberts takes over as the Group Leader in 2022 and we all look forward to supporting him in the role.

24 November 2021
Mount Alexander

Deb led seven walkers on an 8.1 km track around the upper parts of Mount Alexander. Driving to the meeting point required close attention to the road because there were possible kangaroos crossing the road in the very dense fog. The highlights of the walk were viewing the enormous rock outcrops on the western side of the Mount, the views of Castlemaine and Harcourt that were very clear when the cloud had lifted by about 10 am and inspecting the abandoned granite quarry.
Thanks Deb for leading us through the fog and traversing off track to find the more regular tracks.

10 November 2021
Chewton

Eleven intrepid walkers tested their wet weather gear and followed Keith along the White Gum Track. The track was a little steep in parts and the rain caused it to be slippery at times.
After the short break for morning tea, the drizzle disappeared. The track along the water race was tricky and required expert navigation.
Thanks Keith for leading the walk. The group appreciated exploring this area around Chewton.

27 October 2021
Castlemaine

Kevin and Sharon led us on a very interesting 5 km walk around their historic farm on the edge of Castlemaine.
The 150 acre property has many interesting historic features including the water face which carried water to the Castlemaine Gaol last century, beautiful area of original undisturbed box ironbark forest and a revegetation project where 80,000 indigenous trees have been reestablihed.
The highlight of the walk was visiting the site and remains of Colonel John Bull's house. Colonel Bull was one of the original Gold Commissioners on the Mount Alexander Goldfield and built a substantial house and associated buildings on the location where we enjoyed our morning tea.

Thanks Kevin and Sharon for allowing us to visit your farm.

6 October 2021
Castlemaine West Bush

A group of 10 walkers were led by Deb Shand on a very enjoyable 8 km walk in Castlemaine Bush to the west of Castlemaine.
The walk was in beautiful spring weather on well graded tracks through open box ironwork forest. Many species of wildflowers were in bloom and number of walkers were kept busy trying to identify some of them.
The walk finished near the Castlemaine to Maldon Railway line and Deb had timed our finish to perfection as we were able to see the steam train leaving Castlemaine.
Thanks to Deb and John for arranging the walk.

Maldon Historic Reserve

Two groups of nine enjoyed a 8.5 km walk around the Maldon Historic Reserve.
We headed north towards the Castlemaine - Maldon Railway line enjoying light forest and some wildflowers. The area has many examples of historic gold mining diggings. The light sunshine made for perfect walking weather. Thanks Bryan, Julie and Keith for leading the walk.

15 September 2021

With a blue sky and mild weather two groups of walkers headed off into the bush from the Pennyweight Flat Childrens’ Cemetery carpark. Two small groups of walkers each ably led by Sharon and Heather, walking the same route, separated by time and distance for safety, in compliance with COVID safe rules enjoyed the walk.
The walks proceeded through lovely open bush to the top of Elephant Hill where we heard the hilariously sad (or sadly hilarious) story of how the hill got its name. Fortunately for us, there was no rogue biscuit munching elephant to be seen, and we moved on to a more open forest area with many wildflowers.
At one point we stopped at a 400 year old yellow box tree called Me-Mandook Galk (the grandmother tree) by the Dja Dja Wurrung people and it was truly magnificent. From there we visited the Garfield Wheel, and then made our way back down the Goldfields Track to the carpark. Everyone greatly enjoyed the opportunity to be out in the bush with friends.
Thank you Sharon and Heather for a lovely walk.

11 August 2021
Red White and Blue Mine Walk

The Covid lock down restrictions were relaxed two days before this planned walk and it was enjoyable to get out into the bush to take in some fresh air and to catch up with the other walkers. The weather was perfect for a winter’s walk.
Daryl ably led nine walkers through some very interesting native forest with views of last century’s gold mine workings. Some early wild flowers were also enjoyed by the group.
Given it was relatively open bush Daryl led us off tracks for a lot of the walk.
Thanks Daryl for a great walk.

14 July 2021
Mt Alexander
Due to very wet weather and hence a very slippery track, this walk was cancelled.

28 July 2021
Walmer Forest

Only 10 members could participate because of COVID restrictions.
Unfortunately there were some last minute withdrawals, notably our scheduled leaders Deb and Bill, so only 7 walkers set off from the junction of Woodbrook Road and Youngmans Track with replacement leaders, Bryan and Julie. After a few hundred metres on Youngmans, we followed a mountain bike track through to Escape Track. A short distance on Escape and then Millards before following another bike track to Youngmans. A short distance north and then the hills of Pipeline Track. A short break for play lunch, then we followed Riley's Track back to Youngmans, a detour down Escape Track to McManus Road and back up to Youngmans and return to the cars. The weather was kind and the forecast rain didn't eventuate. Thanks Bryan and Julie.

30 June 2021
Mt Beckworth

Greg meet the group in Clunes before we drove onto the start at the Dam Campground, Mt Beckworth. The climb to the top of Mt Beckworth did require a few rest stops to enjoy the views and it was easier that the western face. At the summit the cloud limited the views but it was nice to relax nearby the Lollipop tree. We then tackled the steep decline and enjoyed a ramble around the park. The map photo reflects the terrain of the area. On behalf of the 7 walkers thanks Greg for leading the group. We were pleased to accept the challenge to climb Mt Beckworth 629 meters.

26 May 2021
Hepburn Springs

Thirteen walkers braved the elements for a very enjoyable walk from Breakneck Gorge near Hepburn Springs to the Chocolate factory at Mt Franklin. The predicted rain held off for the duration of the walk. The 7 km walk commenced with a picturesque and narrow track along the gorge and then opened out into typical central Victorian goldfields country. Two long uphill climbs towards the end of the walk got the blood pumping and the lungs working. At the end of a very enjoyable walk everyone was happy to enjoy the delights of the Chocolate Factory. Thanks Angie for leading the walk.

12 May 2021
Fryers Ridge

On a beautiful Autumn morning, 21 walkers enjoyed an amble along Fryers Ridge just out of Taradale. For some of our members it was their first walk with the group for 2021. The walk traversed typical central Victorian Gold country and then followed the headwaters of the Coliban main channel. There was a large flow of water in the channel on its way to Sandhurst Reservoir in Bendigo. The 8.5 km walk took approximately two and half hours. Thanks John for leading the walk.

24 April 2021
Warburtons Bridge Glenluce

The weather was kind to us on this walk, warm with just a few clouds. The terrain was a bit more challenging than expected for some of us, with plenty of ups and downs to manage. There was a good turnout, 14 in the group and as usual lots of good conversation. It was interesting to hear about the old water channels and to see the simple yet enduring structures holding them up.
Thanks Janobai for leading and researching the area.

Fourteen members of the group finished the 2020 Bushwalking program with the annual Black Hill Reserve walk in Kyneton lead by our Convenor John. The weather, the terrain and views did not disappoint and we concluded the walk with coffee in Kyneton. It has been an interesting year and we hope that we will be able to participate in many more walks in 2021.
Thanks John for organising and leading this walk.

25 November 2020
Fryers Ridge

Following further easing of COVID restrictions we had 14 walkers start out in the southern region of the Fryers Ridge State Forest in ideal conditions for walking. Initially we had a few 'race horses' leading the pack but they were soon hobbled and then the remainder of the walk was at a more leisurely pace, enabling us to stop and admire the late season wildflowers which attracted a lot of oohs & aahs and cameras working overtime. A really enjoyable, quite easy walk through varied terrain. We also actually saw some beautiful specimens of large tree ferns!

Thanks Keith for the leading the walk.

11 November 2020
Kalimna Park North

Six walkers joined Peter at the end of Lawson Parade, by the new Castlemaine Secondary College buildings, on a cloudy morning with rain forecast for mid day. Hearts and muscles were warmed up as we climbed from the Devonshire Mine site to the Kalimna Tourist Road, along the northern section of the Kalimna Circuit Track. Crossing the road, after heading down hill the route followed the track along the western side of Moonlight Creek - an area devastated by early mining, with relics of stone huts and long-abandoned fruit trees, and some fine tall gum trees. Climbing up again along a boundary fence, we reached the gate into the area marked Trust for Nature, then along the Eastern boundary fence to the poignant Miners Grave. At the highest part in this section of Kalimna we turned left to reach another high point with views over Barkers Creek - time for morning tea. Then down a rough steep section for an easy walk to the western edge of the park. Then back up to the road to complete our 5.5 km loop walk. Many late season wildflowers added to the enjoyment of the morning, especially the Blue Pincushions Brunonia australis contrasting with the golden Sticky Everlasting Xerochrysum viscosum and Grey Everlasting Ozothamnus obcordatus.
Thanks Peter for the leading the walk.

28 October 2020
Warburton Bridge

Eight intrepid walkers set off under blue skies and in mild conditions for what turned out to be a wonderful walk featuring fantastic sites along the historic Fryerstown race and syphons, ancient aboriginal wells carved into the rock at the base of gullies, and a great display of wildflowers. The terrain included a reasonable amount of hill walking that got our hearts pumping, and we enjoyed morning tea at a Fryerstown race trestle and syphon where it crosses Salters creek. Everyone greatly enjoyed the opportunity to walk together again, and thanks to Janobai for her research and organising such an enjoyable walk.

If anyone wants to read some history about the Loddon Race, and the features that we visited, it's in a story that I wrote for the Chewton Chat. Go to p. 10, plus see the response to the story on p. 11: https://issuu.com/chewtonchat/docs/chewton_chat_september_2020_colour The editor posted the story to the chewton.net Facebook page before publication - and was amazed to get 10,361 views! The story is also featured in the November issue of Gold, Gem & Treasure (available from news agencies).

Malmsbury Botanic Gardens

This was the first walk since the COVID restrictions had eased. Only 10 people were permitted to walk and the members enjoyed the cascading Coliban River in pleasant spring weather. Thanks John

29 July 2020
Whipstick Forest, North of Bendigo

When the walk was advertised there was a keen interest for our members to explore north of Bendigo. As our numbers are currently limited to 10, Alan offered to lead the walk twice. And so, another group of our bushwalkers enjoyed the Whipstick forest today under blue skies and in fine weather. The members commented on how different the Whipstick is to our walks around and south of Castlemaine. The environment is very harsh for plants and native animals. Also the 1860s gold miners, who trekked through the Whipstick, would not have found life easy.
Thanks Alan for your leadership and sharing your research about the Whipstick.

22 July 2020
Whipstick Forest, North of Bendigo

Ten of our members walked through a very different forest today. The Whipstick, north of Bendigo, is a dry environment and the hardy plants are well adapted to their difficult environment. Relics of eucalyptus oil production, surface and deep mining, as well as cyaniding to recover gold from previous diggings are all evident. We really enjoyed the walk and Alan's commentary made it even better. Thanks Alan

8 July 2020
Barkers Creek/Walmer

Again because of the COVID 19 restrictions, only 10 members were able to participate in this walk.
The sunshine was very pleasant and the walk went well. Bryan mapped out a challenging route. The Pipeline Track is tough going! Reminiscent of The Up and Down Track, only steeper. Check out the photos!
Thanks Bryan for leading the walk.

Mt Alexander

The revised COVID 19 restrictions meant that only 10 members were able to participate in this walk.
The sunshine arrived when we got to Ed’s seat and we enjoyed our morning tea at Dog Rocks.
Thanks Keith for leading the walk.

10 June 2020
Colles Rd to Quartz Hill Castlemaine

Our first walk back after the COVID 19 lockdown was held on Wednesday June 10 in cool, clear, sunny weather. Nineteen walkers met at the Pennyweight Flat Children's Cemetery and it was clear that we'd all missed our walks together in the bush. Social distancing rules were observed and made easier by staying mostly on formed tracks. We completed a lovely circuit walk past the Robbie Burns Hotel, then sidled up Scotchman's gully to Quartz Hill. From there we followed a marked trail towards the Garfield Wheel, turning off to rejoin the Quartz Hill track which led us back to the walk start. A beautiful walk on a lovely day in great company. Thanks Jules for planning the walk and Rex for leading it.

Babbington Hill

On a crisp sunny morning we set off from Tram Street, Lyonville and walked into the Wombat State Forest. Bill and Deb expertly led us past the Bullarto Reservoir. After climbing through and/or straddling some fencing, we headed for Top Track and a sharp climb up Babbington Hill. After a well earned rest near the top, we continued on to Babbington Hill Track, where we turned for the walk back to Lyonville. Thank you Deb and Bill for a well thought out and enjoyable 8 km hike and Alan for pointing out the site of the original springs and information on tree markings.

Castlemaine

A strong turnout of walkers joined Jules and Rex at 8am for an enjoyable 8+km hike through the Castlemaine Heritage Park. Our leaders took turns to share their extensive and broad knowledge of the area with us. Rex provided a very interesting history of the Ajax Mine. https://youtu.be/rmIzuOz4tzU
The walk description advised an anticipated finish at 11.00am. They were spot on.
Thanks Jules and Rex, who has made a very strong recovery, for an enjoyable and informative walk.

12 February 2020
Castlemaine

Wednesday dawned warm, with the promise of a sunny day and a mild cooling breeze. A large group of walkers set off, led by Lorrainne, towards Poverty Gully Road and five sharpish uphill sections on the road east. Once we were past the initial climbs we enjoyed a pleasant undulating 10 km walk through the forest and back to the Octopus. Lorrainne had warned us of the the steep inclines and they did test us! It was a reminder to all members to read the leader’s description and ensure your level of fitness is OK to complete the walk with the group. The group’s walking speed is about 4.5kms an hour. Thanks Lorrainne for the interesting terrain and walk.

29 January 2020
Castlemaine

39 walkers fronted up to the Octopus by 8.00am, for the first walk of the year. 38 walkers started the walk. One "fell over" the curb arriving and was "scratched" as well as bruised and abraded. Fortunately Rex was not seriously injured. Sore and sorry, with a bit of injured pride mixed in. Gerry expertly led the walk along Forest and Moonlight Creeks and through Kalimna Park. Pleasant finish at The Dove for coffees and extras. Good walk to shake out the cobwebs, hear speeches, meet new walkers and, share stories. Thanks Gerry

2019

11 December 2019
23 walkers travelled to Black Hill Reserve for the final walk of the season. It was a mild day and the walk was enjoyable, with the leader sharing some of the Reserves history and Alan adding some detail to the 2015 fire discussion. Although part of the Ridge Track was closed for repair, we walked up to the top of the ridge from the southern end. After the walk we drove to John and Robyn's home for lunch. A very pleasant couple of hours of good food, good cheer, lots of laughter, a few speeches, the passing of the Staff and, awards for the best walk (Bryan and Julie) and the best senior's moment (Bill). Desserts were a finishing highlight with Greg's pavlova admired and enjoyed and John's serving of ice cream cones from Butsies Ice cream cart a lot of fun. Thanks John and Robyn for the walk and hosting lunch and walkers for their contributions to the food offerings. We pulled up stumps at 2.30 and closed out a successful 2019 Bushwalking year.

27 November 2019
Mt Macedon.
We had a small number of walkers (9) but we enjoyed big trees, big views of Mt Macedon and Melbourne and a very rocky decline.
Thanks Keith

13 November 2019
Fryers Ridge circuit walk.
It was a pleasant spring day as we left the cars next to the Coliban Main Water Channel and walked into the Fryers Ridge Nature Conservation Reserve. A comfortable near 8 km walk ( we are not sure of the distance covered as three different apps gave three different results at the finish) along well made and marked tracks/roads through typical Goldfields forest. Plenty of native plants and wildflowers to keep everyone interested, including a sighting of a small group of Spider Orchids.
An enjoyable walk ably led by Keith. Thanks

29 & 30 October 2019 Halls Gap and the Grampians

Monday October 28
For those who arrived on Monday, the adventure started with an Indian Curry dinner. Greg discovered that "medium hot" can be akin to scalp-lifting and Peter found his 1/2 Tandoori chicken to have 2 legs and 2 wings. Some bird!

Tuesday October 29
Very warm summer like weather welcomed 26 walkers as we left from the swimming pool car park at 2.00pm to do a 7.5 km circuit walk, incorporating Clematis Falls, Chatauqua Peak, Bullaces Glen and Wallaby Rock. The walk had plenty of highlights and some climbing challenges. The track rose over 250 metres in elevation. Expertly led by Bryan, members and guests enjoyed the walk variety and the rugged beauty of the Grampians. It set us up to enjoy a refreshing libation or two with dinner that evening.

Wednesday October 30
Hot conditions forecast as 25 walkers (in fact it was 24 walkers, as one got lost driving to the car park and took a while to catch up with the group) left the Wonderland car park to walk/climb to The Pinnacle. An early side trip through the Grand Canyon got everyone used to steps, rock climbs and railings. From there we passed the Cool Chamber and Echo Cave all the while continuing to climb. Through Silent Street and onto rocky ledges and stone steps as we gained altitude and reached The Pinnacle. In between the panting, there were sighs of relief as walkers flopped down against rocks for a well earned break, a little morning tea and some viewing. Our leader, Bryan, after giving us a decent break got us moving towards the Sundial car park, passing the Fallen Giant and Devils Gap. While the toughest climbing challenges were behind us this section of the walk presented different dangers. We covered long stretches of rocky ground with uneven broken rock stepping stones requiring care in feet placement and balance. The total walk was just over 4kms and took 3 hours. Brian made sure there were plenty of scheduled stops. A challenging and very satisfying walk highlighting the rugged beauty of this part of the Grampians. There was one fall, which grazed an arm, bruised a shoulder/back and probably an ego, but fortunately did not stop the walker from completing the walk. Well done Peter. All in all a most enjoyable couple of days.
Thank you Bryan and Julie for the organisation and walk leadership.

23 October 2019
Vaughan Springs.
On a glorious spring day we walked out of the Vaughan Springs Park just after 9.00 am. The circuit walk of 9+kms took in sections of the Goldfields Track, and other connecting tracks within the Castlemaine Diggings Heritage Park. An enjoyable and attractive forest walk, expertly led by Sandra, included some side trips, to the ruins of an historic stone cottage and to Tubal Cain mine Cornish Chimney. There was a degree of wonderment at the leaders skill in including so much uphill work in the circuit. Great walk.
Thanks Sandra.

9 October 2019
Paddy’s Ranges Paddys Ranges near Maryborough is a place we drive past and seldom stop. The group enjoyed the variety of vegetation and the weather was just right for walking.
Thanks Ron and Cheryl for leading the walk.

25 September 2019 Big Hill Walk
For this walk, we ventured somewhat further north. A most enjoyable walk through open forest between Bendigo No.7 Reservoir and the Crusoe Reservoir. Our leader, Daryl, with lots of local knowledge and enthusiasm, took us cross country to check out the wildlife and birdlife in tree boxes, nests and scat droppings, as well as detouring into the historic mining sites. Thanks Daryl. It was a top walk.

11 September 2019 Hepburn Walk
Under a clear blue sky and in bright sunshine 21 of our members enjoyed a very pleasant and picturesque walk along the Sailor's Creek valley at Hepburn, from the Blowhole to Tipperary Springs and return. At Bryce's Flat we discussed who the flat was named after, and our resident philosopher Rex explained that it may have been an anglicised Chinese name because during the 1800s "it wasn't Kosher to be Chinese". We stopped for morning tea at Tipperary Springs, then crossed the creek for the return walk. A surprise (or shock) for some was the unexpected appearance of a "nature walker" heading towards us. Nature walkers wear socks, boots and a daypack, and nothing else. Fortunately he used his hands to protect us from seeing things that shouldn't be seen just after eating, however, Les managed a photo of his backside, sorry the back of him as he walked on his way. (A photo is available on request).
Thanks David for leading the walk.

28 August 2019 Castlemaine Soup Walk
Under cloudy, rain threatening skies we took off from the Car Park in the Botanical Gardens. Heading north, northwest from the gardens we walked past some charming historical properties before coming to Widecombe Lower. We were met by the owner and builder who very kindly gave us rundown on the inspiration, building and material challenges and, the remarkable persistence shown in completing the three buildings. We were given access to the buildings and had a fascinating account of the construction. We continued the walk along roads, tracks and paths in and around the forest before returning to our Botanical Gardens starting/finish point. There we were met by Bryan who took responsibility for presenting us with warm/hot soup, accompanied by bread. It was great to see Kevin and Jillie who had come down to join in. Thank you Jules, Alan and Rex for the organisation and leadership together with Bryan for his camp cooking prowess. Also thanks to the soup and breadmakers. A most enjoyable outing.

14 August 2019
Cobaw State Forest A cold overcast sky accompanied us as we started the walk in the Cobaw Forest. Care was needed to safely navigate the muddy, badly eroded, sections of track, as we climbed steadily. After leaving the track we enjoyed a good old "bush bash" to the top of the ridge and then along the ridge through the rugged rock strewn landscape. Interesting views from the site of the old fire spotting tower. I am reliably informed the outlook matches the outlook description of Terrible Hollow, the hiding place of Dick Marston and his brother, in Robbery under Arms. It was an enjoyable and challenging day in the forest.
Thank you Brier and Pam for leading and Keith for providing the technology back up for any directional uncertainties.

31 July 2019
Up and Down Track A gorgeous winter's day in Central Victoria, to tackle the, most aptly named, Up and Down Track. There may have been a chill in the air when we set off from the junction with Green Gully Road, but a couple of climbs later, we were shedding layers of clothing. Keith kept us moving at a solid clip for the 10 km walk through the Upper Loddon State Park. It was a thoroughly enjoyable, slightly longer and more testing, 5th Wednesday of the month walk.
Thanks and a good choice Keith.

24 July 2019 Walmer Forest
A lovely mild winters day, after the fog lifted, in the Walmer Forest. Pleasant 6 km walk, with dappled sun highlighting early blossoms on Golden Wattles. Hot drinks and freshly made scones at Chez Wiglesworth, to finish. Thanks Bill and Deb, for leading an enjoyable walk and providing a surprise late morning tea.

10 July 2019 Mt Alexander
21 walkers enjoyed this local walk very close to Castlemaine. After a steep start to the walk, the gradient was very kind on our knee joints. The rays of sunshine provided some warmth on an otherwise cold winter's day. Thanks Tricia and Bryan

26 June 2019
Tarilta Gorge 10 walkers completed the annual Tarilta Gorge walk. We lost count of the creek crossings. The weather was perfect and we didn’t get lost!
Thanks Greg (aka Tarilta George)

12 June 2019
Paddy’s Ranges Maryborough. A small group of seven intrepid walkers completed a walk north and west of Castlemaine. We'd had a short discussion at the Octopus and decided not to attempt the planned walk near Maryborough given the forecast rain, wind, and lightning. Fortunately for us, Jules Hurley knows Castlemaine really well so we parked at the Botanical Gardens and completed a loop walk in gentle rain along tracks that passed the magnificent Lower Widecombe (hand built by a very talented artisan without the use of power tools), Merryfield, and ending at Das Kaffehaus.

29 May 2019 Trentham Walk We cancelled our Greg’s planned walk. Heavy(ish) rain had made the access tracks impassable for sedans and that's all we had. Even Greg was in a little car having put 85 litres of petrol into the diesel Disco. Not a happy camper. So we walked around Kalimna Park and got to the Dove early.

22 May 2019 The Annual Rogaine. We had a great Rogaine and the team that went missing returned to camp (or where the camp had been) after a few days. They claimed that control 26 was missing but I assured them that it was to the East - not West - of the Gisborne Railway Station. The Tricia Annual Trophy was awarded to Ron's team - who else?

8 May 2019
Breakneck Gorge to Chocolate Mill. Daylesford What a great day for one of our Classic walks: cold; the smell of misty rain on recently burnt forest; slippery narrow paths; blackberries re-growing as you watched; a would-be participant enjoying a casual drive to Creswick and expecting to meet us at the Chocolate Mill and now expecting to navigate in the rogaine!!; another incurring an automatic four game suspension by deliberately headbutting a car door, taking a dive and then protesting she'd been provoked; and to end the day, everyone enjoying litres of hot chocolate slurped from small baths.
Thanks John.

Coliban Channel Taradale.
L.O.L Engineering. Dear Sir/Madam. Sadly your application to construct the water channel between Taradale and Elphinstone has been unsuccessful. Not having your section of the channel connect to either end of the existing water course but instead to instead to go out and back was seen as likely to compromise the fundamental purpose of the project. You might also note that your access instructions led our inspection team to Elsternwick which does sound similar but the scenic detour caused them to be late back to the office and miss our regular knees-up.
Yours sincerely,
Management Team.
(Thanks Lol and Geoff)

10 April 2019
Muckleford
A cold morning and a 9 am start (daylight saving over) saw 28 walkers drive to the Muckleford State Forest, down the Red White and Blue Track to park at the junction with Water Res Track, where Greg joined us. The walk followed the RW&B Track and Dunn’s Track to the Dunn’s Reef mine site, with its spectacular open cut into the hillside. We then headed east off track for about 1 km to join Talbot Track, passing areas where DELWP has thinned the forest and domestic firewood was being collected. Talbot Track becomes Muckleford School Rd by a large farm dam, where we took Bell’s Lane Track to the Red White & Blue mine picnic area for a well earned morning tea. After checking out the deep mineshaft under the poppet head (from the Deborah United mine in Bendigo), we followed the RW&B Track back to the cars.
Thanks Peter.

Lerderderg River Heritage Walk. Blackwood. Circuit
Hello walkers Another great walk that tested stamina and imagination. Stamina in that while one GPS app registered 9.1 km, another read 9.7. I did the longer one. Imagination related to what the area would be like with water. (Lerdergerg is a surveyor's spelling error. The surveyor meant to write Nancy Creek. Close...)
Thanks Keith

27 February 2019
What a great job Alan did for us at Fryerstown. 41 participants is a world record!! And coffee laid on from Melanie's Gaggia machine!! At the cemetery, however, one couldn't help but reflect on the last days of Elizabeth Smart and her tiny children: the field's frenzied clamour; the screams of babies and young children; the keening of desperate mothers; the shouts of angry drunks and men whose 3 metre square claims had been infringed; the smell of sewage and smoke and sweat. Bedlam. (P.S. The vaccination was for smallpox.) The walk was an excellent experience.
Thanks Alan for leading walk and Melanie for the coffee and cake at the Fryers Tea House.

Ajax Mine. 35 excited Bushwalkers joined the early morning 8am and 8 degrees start. Jules and Rex lead us on a tour around the Ajax mine not far from Campbells Creek. Jules and Rex really do know a lot about the hidden gems in and around Castlemaine. If you would like to see inside the mine go to this youtube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmIzuOz4tzU
Thanks Jules and Rex.

Castlemaine Well done to Gerry and his pacemakers for this morning's walk! It was certainly one for the CV. All finishers automatically qualify for front row seats should Red Faces ever make a return to TV. (Note to self: attach wheels to Esky before 13 February.)
Thanks Gerry.

2018

December 12 2018
The Black Ranges gave us so much to be thankful for: granite rocks to step back off; speeches; good company, laughter and tales of derring do; speeches; botanical names to mispronounce and bird calls to mimic; a Christmas Beetle; speeches; beautiful food, some of it with icing; drinks of many colours leading to speeches without punctuation; then dreams of running up Mt Everest carrying a Sherpa and of speeches filling the universe with music.
Thanks John and Robyn. Enjoy a safe off-season and we'll see you in 2019.

November 28 2018
Annual Rogaine Fryers Ridge Chewton Hello Walkers It won't be a surprise to learn that Jesus also organised rogaine events. Matthew, one of his mates and who used to moonlight as a tax collector for the Romans, remembers him standing on The Knoll and reminding competitors: 'Now you lot, listen up. Many who are first will be last and many who are last will be first. And someone flogged control 66.'
Thanks Kevin for organising this fun event and to the leaders who helped the learners.

November 14 2018
Welsh Village Walk Forget the EU, NATO, ASEAN, PSA and even Garfield the Cat. The lot. None has a bar on today's truly multi-cultural walk. North of the Garfield Wheel (probably ex-Manchester) and before reaching Merthyr Reef and the Welsh Village, there was German Gully, Burns Hill, Chinaman Point, Englishman Gully and three Chinese Camps. Oh and t'was ably led by a wee lassie from Forres.
Thanks Frances.

October 31 2018
Mt Macedon On the day before he left to resuscitate the Dead Sea and the Two State Solution, Keith caused the scones to rise and the clouds to part so we were able to see the camels hump and then mount Macedon. It was a great morning, especially for the camels.
Thanks Keith

October 24 2018
Springs Rd to Hunt Gap Rd Mandurang South We don't often venture north of C'maine but today's walk along a stretch of the Coliban gutter that delivers aqua pura to Bendigo was well worth the drive. Walking north meant that water was passing us rather than us passing water.
Thanks Bryan and Tricia

October 10 2018
Spring Gully Car Park to Vaughan Springs What a privilege to go on a beautiful GDT walk with a man who can lead and follow simultaneously and thus prove an aspect of quantum theory that escapes me just at the moment.
Thanks Rob.

September 26 2018
Anderson’s tramway. Wombat Forest. 'Please Sir, I want some more.' Master Roberts, a tall and healthy man, turned pale. (Apologies to Mr Dickens, Oliver Twist, Chapter 2)

An excellent morning. Alan’s leadership of the walk and soup preparation provided a very enjoyable social walk with a difference. Thanks to the soup makers (recover quickly Deb), the 'bakers', the transporters and the weather gods. Great co-operation. Word for the day: jorum.

September 12 2018
GPS malfunction on Mt Beckworth. En route we nearly drove onto a film set in downtown Clunes. The track to the top of Mt Beckworth was steep, long and slippery in places. But the views from beneath the Lollipop Tree were worth it. Our return was lengthened by a malfunction in the GPS (Greg's Positioning System).
But then on cue: 'Follow me. It will be just over there.' Back to Clunes for a late lunch and coffee. An excellent, tough, and accurately graded outing.

August 29 2018
Walmer Forest
T'was braw and bricht to start (tho' the moonlicht was gone) but by play-lunch coats were coming off. What a great area of regenerating forest so close to Castlemaine!
The eastern section of the walk ran within sight of Odgers Rd. Thanks to Brian and Julie for leading us, for pointing out the emerging wild-flowers and for unearthing remnants of the wooden pipeline that carried water to Maldon from Malmsbury.
The lengths some people will go for a drink!

August 22 2018
The Monk Walking Track Area
Roll over Otis Redding, we have a new King of Sole! Peter will remember this morning's for some time. (Free coffee for best one-liner next week.)
Thanks to Jules and Rex for planning the sometimes challenging route and for managing the morning. And to Deb and Bill for providing gaffer tape and 'emergency' transport.

Southern part of Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park '...dashing; amiable; charismatic; a man of fine physique; graceful as an antelope...' Bring anyone to mind? (You've got to be kidding!) In fact they are descriptions of Charles Sanger, the Fryers Bushranger through whose forest Ron and Cheryl led us last Wednesday. There must have been hundreds of similar characters scattered thru the bush. Here is a link to more information http://www.fobif.org.au/vagabond.html We said farewell to Ruth who is taking her infectious enthusiasm to warmer climes. Then to Guildford and a coffee in the weak sun.
Thanks Ron and Cheryl.

July 25 2018
Hepburn Springs Another good walk on a cold day. About 20 members walked from Breakneck Gorge to the Chocolate Mill. The gentle slopes along Breakneck Gorge are easy. The three climbs along the journey mean you can are warm and toasty when you arrive at the Chocolate Mill for a hot chilli chocolate.
Thanks John for filling in for Keith and the car shuffle worked well!

July 11 2018
Maldon to Muckleford Station. An easy walk on a freezing day. We walked quicker than expected because we were all keen to get warm. We were lucky to view the steam train as it past us on the track.
Thanks Peter for leading the walk.

June 27 2018
Goldfields Track north of Mt Alexander.
A very pleasant 9kms winter's walk along the Coliban Water Channel with two steep inclines.
Thanks Bill and Deb for leading the walk and Deb for her extra efforts with the car shuffle.

June 13 2018
Mt Tarrengower We explored the North British Mine and then up the slopes of Mt Tarrengower. It was a good walk for a cold day. For more information about walks around Maldon visit this site. https://www.maldoncastlemaine.com.au/activties/walking/maldon-walks/.
Thanks for leading the walk Margaret.

May 30 2018
Tarilta Gorge Although Castlemaine had a huge dump of rain, the gorge had virtually no water flowing. Very hungry ground must have sucked it all up. A good walk and perfect weather for the 11 members.
Thanks for leading the walk Greg.

May 23 2018
Creswick Forest The beauty of the Le Greche Walk was stunning. We also passed large Pine Forests and followed part of the Gold Fields Track. The walk required travelling a large distance and we all enjoyed the changes in the landscape.
Thanks again John.

May 9 2018
Maldon Historic Area A lovely walk around the base of Mt Tarrengower. The granite outcrops are a very attractive place to take a rest and enjoy the views. There was one hill that tested the walkers and we all made it successfully.
Thanks Cheryl and Ron.

April 25 2018
Muckleford Railway Station to Castlemaine The weather was perfect. We had a good turnout of 32 walkers and who really enjoy the walk.
Surprisingly very few, if any, had been to car drop off point area at the end of walk, so that was interesting.
Thanks for organising the walk for us Peter and to Kevin for leading on the day.

April 11 2018
Jubilee Lake and the Wombat Forest. We enjoyed walking through another part of the Wombat Forest.
Thanks Frances.

March 28 2018
Whipstick Loop Walk at Blackwood. Over 30 members attended a very enjoyable day in the Wombat State Forest starting at the Jack Cann Reserve nearby the Garden of St Erth. Tricia lead the walk and John organised a social lunch for members and partners at the Blackwood Pub.
Thanks team.

March 14 2018
Domino Rail Trail. All our members enjoyed the very pleasant walk following the old railway track.. The filtered light through the trees was impressive. We also appreciated hearing Alan’s commentary about the Coliban River and the local trees.
